 Analyze a Communicative Language Task: 

Describe symptoms to a pharmacist in order to get an appropriate medication.

Grammatical knowledge

Learners will need to use: 

Vocabulary and grammar to describe their symptoms (e.g., cough, chills, fever, aches and pains) and personal information (full name, insurance information, health card number).

Textual knowledge

Learners will need to use:

Joining words to understand how sentences are connected.

e.g.

Prepositions                               Conjunctions 

in, at, by, with, for                       and, but, since, for, or

Functional Knowledge

Learners will need to use:

Common expressions (e.g. greetings, description of symptoms).

Intonations and when to use them (e.g., raising the pitch at the end of a sentence to indicate a question).

Sociolinguistic knowledge

Learners need to use:

Appropriate tone and body language in order to be perceived as polite. 

Strategic competence

Learners need to be able to:

Ask questions about the medication (e.g., dosage instructions, side effects).
